Further Information on UA 199/08 (ASA 21/011/2008, 10 July 2008) – Imminent Execution

INDONESIA Tubagus Maulana Yusuf (m)

Rio Alek Bulo (m)

Nyonya Sumiarsih (f)

Sugeng (m), her son

Tubagus Maulana Yusuf was executed by firing squad on 18 July at 10.30 pm in Benten, North Java. He had been convicted in March 2007 of murdering eight people who came to him for help after he claimed to be a witch doctor who could make people richer. He did not appeal against his sentence, nor did he appeal to the President for clemency.

Sumiarsih and her son Sugeng were executed by firing squad at 1.10am on 19 July near Surabaya city in east Java. They had been convicted in 1989 of the murder of a family of five in an argument over money, and had been on death row for nearly 20 years. Their appeals for clemency were rejected by the President in 2003.

The bodies of all three prisoners were returned to their families early on Saturday morning for burial.

Rio Alek Bulo will almost certainly be executed shortly.

At least 108 people are under sentence of death in Indonesia. These three executions bring the total number of people executed since executions resumed on 26 June 2008 to six. The authorities appear to be preparing to execute a large number of prisoners.

No further action is requested from the UA network. Many thanks to all who sent appeals.
