Africa: Appeals for academics and students who are prisoners of conscience

This report updates “Academics imprisoned in African countries who are prisoners of conscience” (AFR 01/02/89). It provides new information about academics held in Congo, Malawi, South Africa and Sudan, mentioned in the December report and gives details of around 30 students or teachers working in higher education currently detained in 11 countries. Some of the detained are: Jack Mapanje, Blaise Machira, Vera Chirwa, Bashir Omar Fadlalla, Ushari Ahmed Mahmoud, Khalid al-Kid, Seni Konanda, Sie Souleymane Coulibaly, Boukary Dabo, Jean-Clement Bagre, Mahamat Abdoulaye, Ishetu Latu, Edward Oyugi, Mohamed Srifi, Innocent Ndayambaje, Ray Russon, Dominic Mngomezulu, Moncef Ben Salem and Digekisa Piluka The death in custody of Guillaume Sessouma in Burkina Faso is also reported.
