Gambia: Statement for 52nd Ordinary Session of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights

In this statement Amnesty International thanks the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights and respective African governments for their swift intervention and condemnation of the August execution of nine prisoners in the Gambia. The executions are a violation of international and regional human rights standards, as well as applicable national law, in relation to use of the death penalty. The organization urges the African Commission to continue to ensure the Gambian government complies with its obligations under the African Charter to respect the right to life.
