Nigeria: Death sentences for murder

Amnesty International has learned of the sentencing to death of a number of men in Nigeria and is concerned that their sentences may be carried out in the near future. George Emeruo, aged 40, was sentenced to death for murder in Niger State in 1985. AI appealed on his behalf in 1989. AI has recently learned that the Supreme Court in Lagos has upheld the sentence. Four men in Jos, Plateau State, were sentenced to death for murder on 9 April 1991. It is not known if the men have appealed against their sentence. Mbong Udobong was sentenced to death at the High Court in Eket, Akwa Ibom State for murder, probably in July 1991. It is not known if he has appealed.
