In 2002, Omar Khadr was taken into US custody following a firefight with US forces in Afghanistan. Omar Khadr has remained in US military custody ever since, labelled as an “enemy combatant” who may have been recruited by al-Qa’ida when he was as young as 10 years old. Following years of indefinite detention, Khadr is now facing military commission procedures that do not comply with international fair trial standards. The Canadian government has adopted the position that to seek Omar Khadr’s repatriation would be “premature”.
