Greece: Torture and ill-treatment

This report documents recent cases of alleged torture or ill-treatment by members of the security forces. In 1991 alone, AI received more than 40 reports of such cases: victims were allegedly kicked, punched or beaten with truncheons or clubs. Some reportedly suffered falanga (beating on the soles of the feet) and electric shocks. The victims included foreigners, asylum seekers, political activists, criminal suspects and demonstrators. The report examines the circumstances of torture or ill-treatment in Greece and the rights of police detainees, especially non-Greek detainees. AI is also concerned about the apparent failure adequately to investigate cases of torture. A summary of selected cases which AI has raised with the Greek Government is appended.
