Greece: Violations of the right to freedom of expression

AI is concerned about prosecutions and convictions of people in Greece for exercising their right to freedom of expression. Christos Sideropoulos and Anastasios Boulis will be tried on 10 December for comments made in a Greek magazine about the status of the Macedonian ethnic minority. Panos Garganas, Costas Pittas, Angelos Kalodoukas, Tasia Kyrkou and Litsa Yidakou are to be tried in January 1993 for their involvement in a pamphlet on the Macedonian question. Stratis Bournazos, Christina Tsamoura, Vangelio Sotiropoulou and Maria Kalogeropoulou were sentenced to 19 months’ imprisonment for distributing anti-war and anti-nationalist leaflets. Irene Petropoulou was sentenced to 5 months’ imprisonment for a note printed in Amphi, a gay and lesbian magazine.
