Ireland: Protecting human rights on the ground: Amnesty International submission to the UN Universal Periodic Review, October 2011

In this submission, Amnesty International expresses concern in relation to the promotion and protection of human rights on the ground. Longstanding unsatisfactory conditions and regimes in many prisons give rise to concerns of ill-treatment. Ireland continues to refuse to investigate evidence that Shannon airport was used as a transit point for aircraft operating in the context of the US rendition programmes. Mental health services remain widely inadequate.
