Statements to the 45th session of the UN Sub-Commission on Prevention of Discrimination and Protection of Minorities

Presented here are the five oral statements made by Amnesty International (AI) in August 1993 in Geneva. Under item 6 AI described the practice of political killings and “disappearances” by governments against political opponents; under item 10 on the administration of justice and the human rights of detainees, AI examined the question of impunity; under the new sub-item of item 18 on freedom of movement, AI highlighted its concerns about the right to seek asylum and the protection of refugees. AI’s statement to the Working Group on Detention drew attention to its concerns about the death penalty. At the pre-sessional meeting of the Working Group on Indigenous Populations, AI emphasized the range of human rights abuses to which indigenous peoples continue to be subjected.
