Around 80-90% of the housing structures in the Deep Sea informal settlement in the Westlands area of Nairobi were destroyed after a fire broke out on the afternoon of 8 March 2011.
“I had to fast so that I could feed my children and just drank the water I cooked the rice in. Elderly people collapsed around us or slipped into comas.
Our shelter is important because the police stations don't have designated places for women. In the current holding places, women get abused and raped by police.
