On 28 September 2009, Juan Almonte was witnessed being detained by police officers while walking to his office in Santo Domingo. The police always denied having arrested him. Three years after his disappearance, the authorities have failed to fully investigate his fate and whereabouts. As a consequence, nobody has been brought to justice for his disappearance.
Juan Almonte was an accountant and a member of the Dominican Committee of Human Rights. Since his disappearance, his relatives and lawyers have reported being watched by police. They have been followed by people in cars and watched from the street in front of their house. Juan’s sister received anonymous telephone calls asking her to stop publicizing her brother’s disappearance. The authorities have not provided protection for the family.
