Despite the associated risks and difficulties, activists around the world, men and women, campaign to confront discrimination and impunity and to protect and uphold the rights of women.

Many human rights defenders face risks, but women encounter additional risks because of their gender and the issues they address.

One consequence of discrimination is women’s unequal access to education, jobs training and employment.

This lack of equal access to education and labour is exacerbated by violence that may further restrict women’s and girl’s access to work and education.

The failure of governments to create empowering and non-discriminatory environments has long life consequences for women and girls.
