Editorial Guidelines

The amnesty.org website is operated by the International Secretariat of Amnesty International. The site is designed to provide human rights news, research and information for members, volunteers, human rights defenders, non-/inter-governmental organizations, the media and a variety of other stakeholders around the globe.

Our vision and mission

Amnesty International’s vision is of a world in which every person enjoys all of the human rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other international human rights instruments. In pursuit of this vision, Amnesty International’s mission is to undertake research and action focused on preventing and ending grave abuses of these rights.

Independence and impartiality

Amnesty International is independent of any government, political ideology, economic interest or religion. It does not support or oppose any government or political system, nor does it support or oppose the views of the victims whose rights it seeks to protect. It is concerned solely with the impartial protection of human rights.

Diversity of opinion

We strive to be fair and reflect on the website a wide range of opinion on any given topic, as well as all significant strands of thought.

Media content

Media content produced by Amnesty International should be fair and objective.

All footage must be suitable for a global audience, it should also be noted that the content on the site will be accessed by a broad age range.

All footage should be free of any unlicensed material (e.g. unlicensed music, trademarks, logos etc).


Amnesty International is committed to ensuring the privacy of all our users. Our Privacy Policy governs all pages on amnesty.org. It does not apply to pages hosted by other organisations or third party sites.

amnesty.org may be linked to the websites of such other parties, but those other sites may have their own privacy policies that apply to them.

Forum Moderation

All posted comments and user generated media content will be pre-moderated. This means that every comment will be checked by an Amnesty International moderator for compliance with the guidelines below before it is published on the site. We reserve the right to refuse to post any media content submitted.

Amnesty International will not display any material that could be considered offensive in terms of taste, decency, or public feeling, nor will it display material likely to encourage or incite crime or lead to disorder.
Amnesty International will not post material, or links to material, which is knowingly false and/or defamatory, in contempt of court, harmful, inaccurate, abusive, extremist, hateful, harassing, obscene, threatening, racially offensive, profane, blasphemous, lewd, sexist, homophobic, pornographic or otherwise discriminatory and/or offensive.

Amnesty International will not post material that is in violation of intellectual property rights, rights of confidentiality, or rights of privacy, invasive of a person's privacy, or otherwise in violation of any law.
