Job description

Job Title: Head of Resource Mobilization Unit
Programme:
International Fundraising – Resource Mobilization Unit
Reports to: Director of International Fundraising Programme
Responsible for:
Global Fundraising Adviser, Fundraising Information Officer, volunteers

Job purpose:

To provide strategic support, coordination and resources to facilitate and drive direct fundraising activities across Amnesty International including at the International Secretariat, ensuring good stewardship of the movement’s resources and resulting in an integrated programme of support, including training and skill-sharing in support of the movement’s overall growth strategies.

Main Responsibilities:

1. Support sections and structures with the strategic development of their long term fundraising activities and organizational development plans in order to ensure section and structure fundraising targets are met, including the repayment of loans or other resources according to agreed timetables
  • Support sections and structures to implement fundraising plans including 5 year budget and forecast development to ensure fundraising planning skills are developed and the movement’s investment is appropriately managed
  • Provide training and direct skill sharing to sections and structures in order to facilitate the development of movement wide fundraising skills
  • Secure the resources for and facilitate agreement to urgent action in cases where the movement’s investment in fundraising is potentially at risk in order to ensure investment is sustainable in the longer term
  • Facilitate the development of good fundraising practice including Amnesty International policies and guidelines
2. Present recommendations for investment of movement funds in fundraising activity, taking into account an analysis of market opportunity, organizational readiness and Amnesty International’s strategic aims to ensure Amnesty International considers every opportunity for growth
  • Monitor, analyse and evaluate fundraising activities within the movement in order to evaluate investment and ensure continuous improvement in the use of Amnesty International resources
  • Secure section and structure, or International Secretariat where relevant, resources and commitment for investment in fundraising activities to ensure opportunities for growth are acted upon
  • Secure and manage movement wide resources for investment in fundraising activities to ensure resources within the movement as a whole are used to achieve the best possible growth in human rights impact
3. Ensure effective management of the Resource Mobilisation Unit budgets and other resources, and contribute to sound leadership of the International Fundraising Programme
  • Prepare the strategic and operational plans and budgets of the Resource Mobilisation Unit  to ensure co-ordination with the Programme’s overall goals and the IS’s growth targets
  • Manage and lead the Resource Mobilisation Unit to achieve targets with respect to section and structure growth and International Secretariat fundraising
  • Ensure effective work planning; budget management and reporting; support, guidance and feedback to staff; and identification of training and professional development needs.
  • Contribute to the International Fundraising Programme management team and deputize for the Programme Director as needed

Person specification

Skills and experience:

  • Demonstrable and consistent success in using a broad range of fundraising and/or marketing techniques, such as direct marketing, including supporter/customer recruitment and development, foundations and major gifts and/or key customer development, to achieve long term fundraising or marketing goals, preferably gained in an international environment.
  • Demonstrable experience of integrating fundraising and/or marketing activities into overall organisational aims
  • Extensive experience of monitoring and evaluating fundraising or marketing progress and results and making recommendations for future activities or adapting plans accordingly.
  • Experience of assessing market potential and the feasibility of fundraising or marketing plans
  • Experience of leading and managing staff and volunteers, and an understanding of the challenges of managing from a distance
  • Experience of setting and managing detailed fundraising or marketing income and expenditure budgets and in assessing the impact of those budgets on organizational budgets and development
  • Experience of developing and managing financial budgeting, monitoring and reporting systems for fundraising or marketing purposes
  • Demonstrable ability to compile and present reports and documents for a wide range of audiences, adapting communications tools and techniques as appropriate to get the message across
  • Demonstrable ability to initiate, develop and sustain positive working relationships over long periods of time with a wide range of individuals and groups, including those from different cultural backgrounds to the job holder’s own and at a distance
  • Demonstrable ability to negotiate to achieve desired outcomes, recognising and balancing others’ requirements with the job holder’s own
  • Experience in using fundraising databases and an ability to assess database requirements
  • Ability and willingness to undertake extensive travelling and work occasionally in the evenings and on weekends if required.

Terms and conditions

Salary: Under review
Hours: 35 hours per week
Location: Clerkenwell, central London
Contract duration: Permanent contract
Holidays: Full time staff receive 27 days per annum plus one Amnesty International grace day and statutory and national public holidays .
Office hours: 09.30 - 17.30 or 10.00 - 18.00 by arrangement.
Relocation: Relocation assistance will be available for staff members (and their dependents) recruited from over 80 km/50 miles from the International Secretariat office in which the post is based.
Life insurance: 4 x gross salary.
Travel loan: Interest free travel loan for bus, underground, or rail travel to work (no qualifying period).
Pension:  You are encouraged to join the Amnesty International Superannuation Scheme.  This is a defined contribution to which Amnesty International contributes 6% of gross salary.
