Burkina Faso: Caravan briefing

On January 27 Amnesty International is launching a campaign caravan which will tour Burkina Faso to spread information, news and stimulate debate on the subject. The caravan leaves Ouagadougou on 27 January and visit Kaya, Gorom Gorom, Fada N’Gourma, Gon Boussougou, Manga, Gaoua, Bobo Dioulasso, Tougan and Ouahigouya before returning to Ouagadougou on 8 February (see below for full schedule).

Several activities are planned at each stop of the caravan to mobilize women and men around the realization of their right to health. Activities include theatre performances, film screenings and, in some places, sporting events such as football matches. In others, caravan delegates will present the report Giving Birth, Risking Death: Maternal Mortality in Burkina Fasoto medical students in regional nursing schools. Caravan delegates also plan to hold meetings with regional authorities in some locations.

Amnesty International’s campaign against maternal death in Burkina Faso will last at least two years. Through the caravan, Amnesty International hopes to raise awareness about its work on maternal mortality and to collect signatures and voices from around the country asking the government to continue its efforts to reduce preventable maternal death.

You can follow the progress of the caravan through the geoblog on the website at http//www.demanddignity.org
