Richard Mukonga was arrested in the early hours of 29 June 1990 when police entered the University of Lusaka campus to enforce its closure. Students had been in the forefront of demonstrations against the government in Lusaka in June. Richard Mukonga had addressed a meeting on campus the day before.

It is now known that he was released in a general amnesty for all political prisoners and rioters at the end of July. No further action is necessary, thank you to all those who sent appeals on his behalf.
