Further information on EXTRA 73/99 (AMR 49/08/99, 18 June 1999) - Death Penalty

TRINIDAD AND TOBAGOAnthony Briggs

Anthony Briggs, who was scheduled to be hanged on 22 June 1999, has been granted a stay of execution by the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council (JCPC) - Trinidad and Tobago’s highest appeal court, located in London.

The JCPC granted the stay of execution to allow for a full hearing of a motion filed last week. The motion challenges the constitutionality of hanging Anthony Briggs while there is an order of the Inter-American Court on Human Rights in place to preserve his life “until such time as the Court...issues a decision on the matter.”

The date of the full hearing has not yet been scheduled.

No further action by the UA network is required at present. The International Secretariat will continue to monitor developments in the case.
