Further information on UA 211/91 (EUR 42/01/91, 17 June 1991) - Threatened Refoulement of an Iranian Asylum-Seeker

SWEDEN:Esmail Paknejad, Iranian asylum-seeker

Amnesty International has learned that Esmail Paknejad was granted a permanent residence permit in Sweden by the Swedish Immigration Board on

9 August, together with his wife and three children who are now all in Sweden. Their permits were granted for "particular reasons of a humanitarian character".

Mr Paknejad is still in hospital undergoing medical treatment. According to a medical certificate issued by a senior plastic surgeon at the hospital in Stockholm where he has been treated, Mr Paknejad suffers from "about 40% partly deep burn injuries". He had apparently attempted to burn himself to death after the Swedish authorities decided to send him back to Iran, where he had previously been imprisoned and tortured.

No further action is required. Many thanks to all those who sent appeals on Mr Paknejad and his family's behalf.
