ANTI-LGBTI BILL SIGNED INTO LAW BY PUTIN
President Putin signed the bill prohibiting “propaganda of non-traditional sexual relations among minors” into law on 29 June. It came into force the next day, after it was officially published.
The new legislation introduces amendments to several laws, including the Russian Code of Administrative Offences. This provides for enormous fines for both private individuals and officials, up to 90 days' suspension of activities for organizations and up to 15 days' detention for foreign nationals followed by deportation.
The law violates Russia’s national and international human rights obligations and will discriminate against the LGBTI community and severely limit their freedom of expression, association and assembly.
We will continue our campaigning to ensure that the discriminatory law is repealed, as well as providing solidarity and support to Russian LGBTI organizations and communities.
No further action is requested from the UA network. Many thanks to all who sent appeals. We will continue campaigning through other means.
