REPUBLIC OF GEORGIA:Gia KHACHIRASHVILI
Amnesty International has learned that Gia Khachirashvili has been executed.
Georgian Minister of State for Abkhazian Affairs, Georgy Khaindrava, was quoted on 18 November 1992 as saying that Georgian citizen Gia Khachirashvili had been shot "recently" after being convicted of treason by a court martial.
FURTHER RECOMMENDED ACTION: Please send telegrams/express and airmail letters either in Russian, English or your own language:
- expressing regret at the execution of Gia Khachirashvili;
- urging that all those sentenced to death are granted the right of appeal to a court of higher jurisdiction, in line with internationally agreed human rights standards;
- expressing unconditional opposition to the death penalty in all cases as a violation to the right to life and the right not to be subjected to cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment or punishment as proclaimed in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
