TUNISIA:Hussain Jandoubi




Hussain Jandoubi, the 36-year-old high school teacher from Kef arrested on 29 December 1990, was released uncharged on 22 January 1991 after having been held in garde à vue incommunicado detention for 25 days (that is, 15 days beyond the 10-day period allowed by Tunisian law).


Hussain Jandoubi was among the hundreds of the sympathizers of the unregistered Islamic opposition party al-Nahda detained for questioning in the last four months in Tunisia.


FURTHER RECOMMENDED ACTION: Express and airmail letters:


- welcoming Hussain Jandoubi's release, but expressing concern that he was held in garde à vue detention beyond the 10-day period allowed by Tunisian law.
