MUHAMMAD HAZA'A EXECUTED
Muhammad Abdul Karim Muhammad Haza’a was executed on 9 March despite international and local appeals, including a request by the Yemeni Attorney General to review his case, since his age had been disputed.
Muhammad Abdul Karim Muhammad Haza’a was executed at 11am on 9 March, in the south-western city of Ta’izz. The head of prosecution in Ta’izz delayed the execution for two hours to provide the Attorney General with the possibility of suspending the execution. The execution had already been postponed for a week because of appeals by Amnesty International and other, Yemeni and international, organizations.
On 4 March, the Yemeni Attorney General signed a request filed by Muhammad Haza’a’s lawyer that should have automatically guaranteed the referral of his case to the appropriate courts for review. The request was filed on the grounds that he had been under 18 at the time of the killing, and that it had taken place in self-defence. The Attorney General was said to have referred this request to a prosecutor in Ta’izz, but when the lawyer approached him on 6 March, the prosecutor apparently refused to look at it.
No further action is requested from the UA network. Many thanks to all who sent appeals.
