Cameroon: Further information on prisoner of conscience / health concern / cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment

Pius Njawe and new name: Michel Michaut Moussala: On 13 January 1998, Pius Njawe, a prominent journalist and director of the independent newspaper Le Messager who was charged with dissemination of false news, was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment and a fine. AI believes he is a prisoner of conscience imprisoned solely because of his legitimate professional activities and right to freedom of expression. AI is also concerned for his health while imprisoned at New Bell prison. Michel Michaut Moussala, journalist and director of Aurore Plus, was convicted for diffamation and, although not yet arrested, could be imprisoned at any time as a prisoner of conscience.
