Ethiopia: Submission to the United Nations Human Rights Committee

Amnesty International is submitting this briefing for consideration by the Human Rights Committee ahead of its examination in July 2011 of Ethiopia’s initial report on measures taken to implement its obligations under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights . This submission provides an overview of the organisation’s main concerns about arbitrary arrests and detention of thousands of perceived government opponents as well as measures taken by the government to silence dissent through restrictions on the legitimate exercise of individuals’ freedom of expression and association in the country.
