Cote d’Ivoire: Government opponents are the target of systematic repression

There is concern that during the presidential election campaign in September and October 1995, which at times involved violent confrontations between oppostion supporters and security forces, hundreds of political opponents were arrested. Over 200 remain in prolonged detention without trial and dozens of others have been convicted under restrictive legislation. There is also concern at the increasing number of prosecutions and systematic convictions of journalists sympathetic to the opposition. The Ivorian Federation of Students and School Pupils (FESCI) has been targeted with dozens of student members detained incommunicado, many subjected to torture and other ill-treatment. Amnesty International is calling on the authorities to investigate these human rights violations.
