Cote d’Ivoire: Further information on legal concern / fear of ill-treatment

Picas Damane, Charles Ble Goude, Souleymane Kamarate, Sylvanus Gore: On 24 December 1996 the four leaders of the Federation estudiantine et scolaire de Cote d’Ivoire (FESCI, Ivorian Federation of Student and School Pupils) named above, were transferred to the main prison in Abidjan, la Maison d’arret d’Abidjan. Details of their treatment while held incommunicado are not yet known. On 7 January 1997 Picas Damane, Charles Ble Goude and Sylvanus Gore were sentenced to two years’ imprisonment, and are considered to be prisoners of conscience. Souleymane Kamarate was acquitted.
