This report provides evidence of continuing use of torture with impunity in Kenya. The role of the health professions in defending human rights is impeded by the limitations placed on professional activities and by harassment from the authorities. Prisoners remain unable to get adequate medical care and medical evidence of torture is frequently not sought, or if available, is not always admitted as evidence of torture in trials. Two Amnesty International delegations in 1996 gathered evidence of torture in western Kenya and Amnesty International is calling for an investigation into these and other reports of torture.
