Nigeria: What is a forced eviction?

A forced eviction is the removal of people against their will, from the homes or land they occupy, without legal protections and other safeguards. That is how forced eviction is defined by the UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights. The UN Special Rapporteur on adequate housing has developed Basic Principles and Guidelines on Development-based Evictions and Displacement which describe the steps that should be taken before, during and after evictions in order to ensure compliance with international human rights law.
