Sierra Leone: Recommendations on the draft Statute of the Special Court

This report sets out Amnesty International’s main concerns about the draft Statute of the Special Court , established to try those who are most responsible for the brutality during the past years of armed conflict. Amnesty’s concerns include: the omission of several serious crimes from the jurisdiction of the Special Court and the serious flaws contained within others; insufficient protection from unfair trials; the possible prosecution of child soldiers; the role of victims and witnesses; the independence of the judiciary of the Special Court. The report ends with a series of recommendations to the UN Security Council.
