Somalia: Urgent need for effective human rights protection under the new transitional government

The report focuses on the need for protection of the rights to personal security from killing by militias, rape and kidnapping for ransom; humane treatment of prisoners; protection of human rights defenders; protection of humanitarian workers and NGOs; and protection of vulnerable groups. The report highlights the urgent human rights issues in Somalia at this critical juncture and describes the background of human rights abuses from 1969 to the present. The report concludes with Amnesty International’s recommendations for human rights for the first year of the TFG.
