South Africa: Struggle for maternal health: Barriers to antenatal care in South Africa: Executive summary

This is the summary of the Amnesty International report which focuses on the access vital to antenatal care early in pregnancy in South Africa. Even though such care is free, many women and girls do not attend clinics until the later stages of their pregnancy. This has grave consequences for their health, and can be fatal in a country where around a third of pregnant women are living with HIV and three-quarters are living in poverty.
