Guatemala / Mexico: Human rights violations by the Guatemalan army in the Mexican border area

Amnesty International is concerned about recent reports of human rights violations, including torture and “disappearance” of Mexican citizens, by Guatemalan soldiers in the border area of the Mexican State of Tabasco in late May and early June 1991. Joaquin Lopez Lopez was abducted on 3 June 1991 by members of the elite “Kaibil” unit while working on the ejido (communal landholding) Nuevo Progreso. His bloodstained clothing was reported found inside Guatemalan territory. He has not been seen since. A few days before Crisoforo Alejo Hernandez was allegedly severely beaten by Guatemalan soldiers in his home at El Bejucal. Other violations include the “disappearance” of Guatemalan health worker and refugee Armando Mazariegos Paz abducted in Tapachula in October 1990.
