Chile: Human rights lawyer charged with sedition

Hector Salazar Ardiles, a human rights lawyer working on the case of the assassination of Santiago Nattino Allende, Manuel Guerrero Ceballos and Jose Manuel Parada in 1985, was detained on 14 April 1994 and charged with sedition. He was released on bail on 15 April. His arrest followed television and newspaper interviews in which he asked if any Carabinero officer was ready to follow the orders of General Stange, a former Carabinero chief implicated in covering up the 1985 killings, and risk life imprisonment. AI believes that he has been charged solely because of his public statements and, if imprisoned, would adopt him as a prisoner of conscience.
