Amnesty International (AI) is concerned by reports that at least several hundred people may be imprisoned for political reasons in Cuba. Up to three hundred may be prisoners of conscience. They include members of unofficial political and human rights groups, such as Criterio Alternativo or the Comité Cubano pro Derechos Humanos, unofficial religious groups and trade unions. Some 56 cases of prisoners already convicted or currently awaiting trial are briefly described. The charges most frequently brought are illegal association, clandestine printing, public disorder, and incitement to commit crimes. Other charges include disrespect, defamation, enemy propaganda and rebellion. AI is concerned also about reportedly deteriorating conditions in Cuban prisons.
