On 23 September 2008, the US Supreme Court issued a stay of execution for Troy Davis, less than two hours before he was to be put to death in Georgia. He has been on death row for 17 years for a murder he maintains he did not commit. The stay of execution issued by the US Supreme Court will remain in force while it considers whether to hear the case.
