Bangladesh: Reports of torture and possible extrajudicial executions

This paper presents AI’s concerns about alleged unlawful or unnecessary use of lethal force and other ill-treatment by Bangladesh security officials. At least 10 people reportedly died and more than 100 were injured in three separate incidents in 1991. In March 1991, about 100 people were injured in Kushtia when police reportedly attacked a gathering of unarmed civilians. Some of the wounded were allegedly beaten in police custody. In August, three men died and several others were injured in Chotodarogahat, near Chittagong, when police allegedly opened fire on people gathered near a tea-stall. At least seven prisoners were reported killed by security personnel in Dhaka Central Jail during a wave of jail riots in April 1991. Several others were allegedly tortured.
