In 2001, journalist Probir Sikdar was attacked with a long knife and shot by a group of men believed to have been hired by an alleged criminal about whom he had written. Five persons were reportedly arrested but were later released. All five were later reported to have died in mysterious circumstances. Amnesty International recommends that the Government of Bangladesh ensure that all those found to be responsible for the attack are brought to justice promptly and tried in accordance with international fair trial standards.
