Sheikh Belaluddin, a renowned journalist and prominent member of the Islamic party, Jamaat-e-Islami, was severely injured in a bomb attack in February 2005. He later died of his injuries although three other journalists with him reportedly recovered from theirs. It is believed that pressure from Jamaat-e-Islami for a full investigation may have prompted the authorities to voice assurances to that effect. Amnesty International calls on the Government of Bangladesh to ensure that all those found to be responsible for the attack resulting in this death are brought to justice promptly and tried in accordance with fair trial standards.
