Amnesty International has received consistent reports of police committing a series of human rights violations including torture, ill-treatment and at times unlawful killings. However, police officers are rarely held to account for their actions. To date, no independent, impartial investigation has taken place into reports of police violence in Nabire, Papua. Amnesty International is therefore calling on the Indonesian authorities to conduct prompt, effective and impartial investigations into reports of police human rights violations and for an independent police oversight mechanism to deal with complaints from the public.
