State of Cambodia: Killings of demonstrators

Amnesty International is concerned about the possibly excessive use of force by Cambodian security forces which resulted in the killings of demonstrators during the protests in Phnom Penh on 21 December 1991. AI has information about the deaths of eight people and has received reports that at least three others were killed on 21 or 22 December. The names of three of the dead are known to AI. They are: Yin Taorm, aged 43, Kim Phy, a 17- year-old high school student and Tang Long, aged 21. Those injured reportedly included a 74-year-old woman and a young woman who was paralyzed by a bullet lodged in her neck. Although 37 people arrested during the demonstrations appear to have been released, AI remains concerned by reports indicating that others might still be held.
