Kingdom of Cambodia: Prison term for newspaper editor Chan Rotana

AI is concerned about the prison sentence imposed on the editor of the newspaper Samleng Yuvachen Khmer (Voice of Khmer Youth) on 27 February 1995 by the Phnomh Penh Municipal Court. He was found guilty of “disinformation” and sentenced to one year’s imprisonment and a fine of five million Cambodian riels. He remains released on bail pending appeal. AI would consider him to be a prisoner of conscience if he were to be imprisoned. During the last 8 months, the government has become increasingly intolerant of criticism of its policies: newspapers have been closed and their property confiscated, journalists and editors harassed and threatened and two editors killed in the last four months of 1994.
