AI is calling for the release of Chon Kyong-hee, a 32 year old art teacher, editor and practising Christian who was arrested in 1992. She was arrested because of her membership of Sanomaeng (Socialist Workers League), an organization defined by the authorities as “anti-state”. AI believes that there is no evidence that Chon Kyong-hee or other members of Sanomaeng planned the violent overthrow of the state; Sanomaeng has stated its committment to using non-violent methods of political activism.
