Several candidates, dozens of their supporters and two journalists were detained in the Maldives in the weeks before parliamentary elections on 2 December 1994. AI fears that their arrests were politically motivated in an attempt by the government to supress views critical of the government. Similar tactics were reportedly used during previous election campaigns.
