Sri Lanka: Open letter to political parties contesting forthcoming elections

This is the text of a letter sent by Amnesty International’s Secretary General, Pierre Sane, to the political parties contesting parliamentary elections scheduled for 16 August 1994. In it he asks that they make clear their specific commitments to human rights protection and suggests three main areas for action: constitutional and legal reform, ending impunity and the further ratification of international human rights and humanitarian standards.
