Sri Lanka: Unresolved “disappearances” from the period 1987-1990: the case of Sevana Army Camp

This report contains details of 46 cases of “disappearances” from Sevana Army Camp in Embilipitiya, Ratnapura District in late 1989 and early 1990, at the height of the campaign against the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP). Most of the victims were young men between 16 and 19 years old attending local high schools. Their relatives have so far had no clarification from the authorities of the fate of those arrested and have no means of redress through official channels. Amnesty International has urged the Government of Sri Lanka to extend the terms of reference of the Presidential Commission of Inquiry into Involuntary Removal of Persons to include investigation of cases which occurred prior to January 1991 (when these cases occurred) and to continue after January 1992.
