Thailand: Burmese and other asylum-seekers at risk

AI is concerned about the treatment of asylum-seekers in Thailand, which, the organization believes, does not meet international minimum standards. Hundreds of thousands of refugees, mainly from Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar (Burma) and Viet Nam, have sought refuge in Thailand in the last 40 years and have been allowed stay for many years. However, recently, the treatment of asylum-seekers and refugees has become increasingly harsh. Some refugees are reportedly subjected to detention, ill-treatment and forcible return to countries where they may face persecution. In particular, those from Myanmar, now the largest single group of refugees in Thailand, are at risk of detention and forcible return.
