Viet Nam: Arrests of political prisoners, 1990-1991

This paper describes AI’s current concerns in Viet Nam: while welcoming the releases of political prisoners in late 1991 and early 1992, AI continues to be concerned about the detention of at least 60 people, including prisoners of conscience reportedly arrested during 1990 and 1991. Most of those mentioned in this report have been either placed under house arrest or detained without charge or trial for long periods; in two cases where trials were provided, AI is concerned that these may not have been fair. The cases of political arrest documented include writers, journalists and other alleged government critics. This paper also reports AI’s concerns about the arrest and detention of a number of Protestant pastors and lay elders of the Jeh, Jerai and Koho tribes.
