Viet Nam: No progress on key human rights concerns: Amnesty International Submission to the UN Universal Periodic Review, January – February 2014

In this submission Amnesty International assesses the implementation of recommendations previously accepted by Viet Nam, including in relation to freedom of expression of human rights defenders and dissidents and in relation to the death penalty. Amnesty International is concerned at the lack of independence of state institutions, including the justice system which is used to repress peaceful opposition and critics of government policies and practices. Moreover, while the new draft Constitution includes recognition of the right to freedom of expression, this is limited by vaguely worded national legislation.
