In this appeal, Amnesty International calls for the immediate and unconditional release of Brother Nguyen Thien Phung (Huan) as a prisoner of conscience, detained solely for peacefully exercizing his right of freedom of religion and expression by his activities as a member of the Congregation of the Mother Coredemptrix. In May 1987 he was among a group of 23 Roman Catholic monks arrested and subsequently he was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment. The other 22 priests were sentenced but have now been released.
