Amnesty International's concerns in 23 European countries are summarized and updated in this report. They cover issues such as conscientious objection to military service, ill-treatment, sometimes amounting to torture, in police custody, conditions in which prisoners are held and the death penalty. The need for a fair policy for asylum-seekers is discussed and a list of states which have ratified or acceded to international human rights conventions is provided. The appendix gives a list of public material issued on countries in Europe during the period covered by the report.
